The best MABC progeny outperformed the recurrent parent by two to four times under severe drought conditions, with no yield reduction under optimal conditions.

Kernel number in maize is correlated negatively with the length of the anthesis-silking interval (ASI).
A short ASI has been identified as an easily measured, visual trait which may identify enhanced drought tolerance in maize.
Results confirmed that there was no treatment by hybrid interaction at any site–yr for any of the parameters evaluated.
Delaying weed control reduced plant height, leaf tip number, shifted and reduced biomass accumulation, kernel number and grain yield and lengthened ASI for both hybrids.
Although yield losses occurred with the delay in weed control timing, no yield differences were observed between hybrids suggesting that there was no additional physiological cost associated with the drought tolerant traits.
The drought tolerant hybrid, however, was found to have a shorter ASI, lower kernel number and higher kernel wt compared to the non-drought tolerant hybrid.
Hence, physiologists and breeders have devoted significant efforts in identifying relevant secondary traits correlated to grain yield for indirect selection.
These include anthesis silking interval (ASI) between male and female flowering and several other morpho-physiological traits [8, 9].
Comments Anthesis Silking Interval In Maize
Stress, Anthesis - Silk Interval and Corn Yield Potential.
Anthesis — silk interval An indicator of stress. One of the best indicators of how plants respond to stress during flowering is the Anthesis — Silk Interval, ASI. This measures the time in days between pollen shed and silk emergence. We also are concerned about 'nick,' referring to the overlap of these two critical developmental stages.…
Delaying Weed Control Lengthens the Anthesis-Silking.
For maize, improved drought tolerance has been associated with such traits as ears plant 2 1, decreased tassel branching, anthesis-silking interval ASI; the length of time between pollen shed and receptive silk emergence, kernel number, and kernel wt Bolan os and Edmeades 1996; Edmeades et al. 1993,1999. These traits are easy to measure and…

Anthesis and Silking Dynamics of Maize under Contrasting.
Anthesis and silking percentages were calculated as the number of plants attaining those stages every day interval following Ge et al. 2012. The anthesis silking interval ASI was calculated as the difference between the days to 50% silking and the days to 50% anthesis. The silk growth rate SGR was determined in centimeters per day…

The Role and Regulation of the Anthesis-Silking Interval.
In maize, a major effect of water stress is a delay in silking, resulting in an increase in the anthesis-silking interval, which is an important cause of yield failures.…
Meta-analyses of QTL for grain yield and anthesis silking.
Identification of QTL with large phenotypic effects conserved across genetic backgrounds and environments is one of the prerequisites for crop improvement using marker assisted selection MAS. The objectives of this study were to identify meta-QTL mQTL for grain yield GY and anthesis silking interval ASI across 18 bi-parental maize populations evaluated in the same conditions across…
