By incorporating lessons learned from other schools, USU implemented a major curricular revision in 2 years—compared to the more usual timetable of 3 to 7 years.
The fact that this was successfully accomplished is testament to the innate creativity, dedication, and “can-do” spirit inherent in the University's culture.Many of these changes are predicated on reforms advocated in the updated Carnegie Foundation report (2010) (a.k.a.Flexner II) and have led to the establishment of a totally revised School of Medicine (So M) curriculum.As René Dubos, an eminent microbiologist at the Rockefeller Institute, noted in his 1968 text, “Man, Medicine & Environment,”.” With this in mind, and under the direction of the Dean of the USU So M, we embarked on a 6-month period of discovery (June–November 2009) followed by a 10-month period of educational planning and development (December 2009–September 2010).This in turn, culminated in an intensive phase of detailed curricular planning or operationalization (October 2010–July 2011), all of which led to the implementation of a totally revised So M curriculum in August 2011.Editor's Note: Many schools of medicine in the United States are currently revising or just recently completed major revisions of their medical school curricula.This commentary incorporates the perspectives of a recent future-oriented Surgeon General, the Dean of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences' School of Medicine, a nationally renowned educational scholar, and a senior physician who were charged with coordinating the design and implementation of the first major revision of the University's medical school curriculum in over 30 years.The challenge is to learn more about the various systems in medical education ...The last century has witnessed tremendous changes in the education and training system of medical students, as well as medical and surgical residents, in short, our future physicians.It’s based on principles of collaboration, unobstructed discovery, and, most importantly, scientific progression.As Ph D students, we found it difficult to access the research we needed, so we decided to create a new Open Access publisher that levels the playing field for scientists across the world.
