For students whose knowledge is sufficient to communicate in a limited way Students are taught to have simple oral and listening skills and communicate ideas about greetings, people and places, jobs, days of the week, seasons, lifestyles, travel, places of interest, food, the future, etc.The student is expected to complete EDUTL 5902 within one calendar year after beginning graduate school.The Graduate Studies Committee in the student’s graduate program may request an extension of the time limit.Accuplacer ESL assesses students in two subject areas: Reading and Writing.Each subject area has two assessments: Reading The rubric for the EAP placement test can be found here.Exemption from sitting for the ESL Composition Placement Essay may be granted to students who either have a total score of 114 on the IBT TOEFL, or a total score of 101 and a score of 28 on the writing section.Alternatively, students with a score of 9.0 on the IELTS, or an overall score of 8.0 and a score of 8.0 on the writing module are also eligible for exemption.They also learn oral and listening skills and how to ask and give information, share opinions, describe places and people, talk about habits and routines, give directions, make plans, offer advice, compare traditions, make predictions, etc.Students in this level continue to work on their writing skills and to learn intermediate English grammatical structure.International freshmen who do not meet minimum college-readiness test scores are required to take placement testing in Reading and Writing.Non-native English speakers will take the Accuplacer ESL assessment while international native English speakers will use Accuplacer.
