I know that many young, aspiring writers think that earning a degree in English is the best way to carve out a career in writing.
Using their command of the common language of their audience, writers conceptualize, research, write, and edit polished manuscripts, poems, articles, and other types of written content.
In their role, they may work across genres, from nonfiction to poetry, fiction to satire.
Today, I spend most of my time writing blog posts for small businesses and start-up clients (and I make some money writing my own here on Medium) — meanwhile, I had a grand total of It felt like my program was primarily geared towards people who wanted to write fiction one day.
But as a naive high school senior, I didn’t really know what type of writing I wanted to do.
Occasionally, I’ll come to the conclusion that while a particular choice wasn’t technically necessary for my career, I enjoyed it so much that I wouldn’t go back and change it even if I had the option. I don’t write about politics too often, but the experience definitely improved my research skills, helped me analyze media with a more critical eye, and taught me so much about recent history and our current political system that I don’t regret it one bit.

From the copywriter working on Madison Avenue in New York to the self-employed screenwriter trying to find a break in Hollywood, writing is an extensive and diverse professional field.I got to take some creative writing workshops, which were typically my favorites and helped me improve as a writer more than any other courses.My electives were basically choices between analyzing different subjects, time periods, authors, or cultures through literature.Along with superior writing skills, it often falls upon writers to do exhaustive research when writing, so they must have superior research skills as well.They may be called upon to parse data and find the story within that data and write about it, so they should be able to understand data and data sets.
