Research Paper Animal Testing-28
We argue that companion animals serve a unique role in illuminating just what it means to use biological technologies and examine the implications for human-animal relationships.Though philosophers have often treated animals as technologies, we argue that the biomed-ical use of companion animals presents a new configuration of ethical and technological concerns that deserves more attention. This article is a panel presentation by Professor Kathy Hessler in which she advocates for more critical attention paid to ethical and legal issues pertaining to animal testing.

more This article is a panel presentation by Professor Kathy Hessler in which she advocates for more critical attention paid to ethical and legal issues pertaining to animal testing.

Notable topics of Professor Hessler’s talk include the philosophical underpinnings that have encouraged the use of animals in research testing, the scant patchwork of protections the legal system currently affords research animals, and the implications of shifting from in vivo to in vitro testing models, with the former predicated upon dualistic Cartesian concepts and the latter informed by the Darwinian paradigm.

Animal ethicists believe that animals, as conscious beings, deserve the same rights protections and liberties as human beings (Regan, 1983; Singer, 2008).

While protesting against vivisection at the University of Toronto, I pondered another way to effectively inform the public, since new research refrains from harming animals (Balls, 2000, 2001: Lim, 2000; Indian Ministry of Environment and Forests, 2011).

Though it seems that companion animals solve many of the ethical dilemmas caused by the use of laboratory animals, the use of companion animals presents its own set of ethical concerns.

This paper contextualizes the use of companion animals in research.more One of the touchstone principles in Australia's regulation of the use of animals for scientific and educational purposes is reduction, refinement and replacement (3Rs).However, the use of animals for scientific and educational purposes is increasing in Australia, raising concerns about the effectiveness of the current regulatory framework in achieving the objectives of the 3Rs.moreİnsan ve hayvanın birlikte yaşamı insanlık tarihi kadar eskidir.Kâinatın bir parçası ve ekolojik dengenin önemli bir unsuru kabul edilen hayvanlardan insan, beslenme, giyinme ve hareket etme başta olmak üzere birçok alanda eskiden beri faydalanmaktadır. The extreme nature of animal testing promotes a general indifference to animal suffering which dominates community attitudes (O’Sullivan, 2011).One of the touchstone principles in Australia's regulation of the use of animals for scientific and educational purposes is reduction, refinement and replacement (3Rs).However, the use of animals for scientific and educational purposes...
