Plan therefore to invest your research time in understanding your sources and integrating them into your own thinking.Your note cards or note sheets will record only ideas that are relevant to your focus on the topic; and they will mostly summarize rather than quote. So, what I am looking for is an approach to accumulate the new knowledge and to facilitate reviewing them without the need to skim through the paper again and again.
There are many other points you need to consider while writing notes for your research project.
First thing to consider off course is to take notes systematically and why you should be systematic you will know later when you will be analyzing your notes.
When I start reading into a new topic, I end up highlighting almost each paragraph of the paper/review.
This doesn't make any sense, and it is actually making me slow and frustrated and it is holding me from reading more. Update: although two very important points of how to approach new papers and how to tag them have been addressed in the answers so far, my main concern was about the new acquired details which I can't remember a few months later.
For example write down the title on the top of the note then carefully write down the direct quotation form the book or article.
You can write down your own comments on the bottom clearly specifying that it is different from the direct quotation that is from the book.
It is easy to take notes from here and there and writing down notes whatever note book you have in hand but later when you will be analyzing them and making your conclusion you will feel like either information is missing or it is not clear to you.
Keep one notebook with you all the time so that you can take notes on that.
