Since 2002, TIRF has supported students completing their doctoral research on topics related to the foundation’s priorities.Each year, applicants who have been advanced to candidacy in legitimate Ph D or Ed D programs are invited to submit proposals for Doctoral Dissertation Grants (DDGs).
And, as it usually does, TIRF has posted updates to many of its reference lists, in order to help researchers at all levels further their interests.

If a person finishes their doctoral program in May 2012, for example, he or she would no longer be a doctoral student when the award recommendation is made in July 2012.
Consequently, that person would not qualify for a DDG.

Each year the highest rated Doctoral Dissertation Grant proposal is awarded in the name of the late Russell N. English as a Medium of Instruction Language Planning and Policy Plurilingualism in Business, Industry, the Professions, and Educational Contexts Research on Revitalization of Endangered Indigenous Languages (policy and planning focus) Students’ Age and Effective English Language Education in Schools Teaching English to Young Learners Content-based Instruction Digital Technology in Language Education Migrants and Refugees: Teaching and Assessing English Research on Revitalization of Endangered Indigenous Languages (curriculum and teaching foci) Language Assessment English as a Medium of Instruction (e.g., assessing the English of those who must teach in English) Content-based Instruction (content-based assessment being a recently added [1990’s] subfield of assessment) Language Teacher Education (assessing teachers’ target language proficiency) Teaching English to Young Learners (e.g., developing appropriate means of assessing young learners’ language development – also a recent “hot topic”) Migrants and Refugees: Teaching and Assessing English Please note that the ability for TIRF to make payments for a grant, prize, or other purpose may be restricted.
Although TIRF is an independent foundation, it remains subject to the laws governing the United States of America (where TIRF is registered), including governmental sanctions that are in force and may limit doing business with individuals or organizations in/from certain countries.
